Expansion of Workers Eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit

The Federal government announced changes to the eligibility criteria for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), which provides $2,000 every four weeks to workers who have suffered reduced income due to COVID-19. The major change is that people who are still earning up to $1,000 per month will be able to also apply for the CERB, when they were not allowed to before. As well, workers (including seasonal) who have exhausted their EI benefits and are unable to find work will also qualify for CERB. All of these changes will be retroactive to March 15, 2020. Official changes to the existing legislation have not been made at this point, and more details are to be posted soon on the CERB application website. We will provide updated information when it becomes available.
