Charities and Giving - Changes Due to COVID-19

It has been announced that due to COVID-19 the Canadian Revenue Agency is extending the filing deadline for T3010s for charities until December 31, 2020, effectively for all year ends from September 2019 to June 2020. Recognizing that charities will be focused on deploying their resources to address the additional effects of COVID-19 this will allow charities more time to complete and submit their T3010.

The CRA’s Charities Directorate has suspended all operations until further notice including the call centre, registration and audit activities. If you require information on operating a charity you can view the web page here: CRA Charity and Giving Website

Charities now also have the option to register for CRA’s secure online services. You can register through the My Business Account and you and your representatives will be able to easily access tax information and have the ability to complete and file the online T3010 form.

Pleases visit My Business Account for information regarding My Business Account for Charities and to sign up.

Further information on the My Business Account for Charities can also be found here: New Digital Service

There have been no announcements regarding other types of filings, such as the T1044 Non-Profit Organization Information Return.

Strike Off Provisions Suspended for NPOs & Co-operatives

On March 20, 2020, the Director of Corporations and Registrar of Co-operatives suspended the strike off provisions for non-profit corporations, co-operatives and new generation co-operatives. As a result, entities that are not able to file annual returns or financial statements, or hold annual general meetings will not be struck from the register at Information Services Corporation (ISC). As per the order, the suspension of these provisions is in place indefinitely. Late filing fees at ISC are also suspended at this time. Entities that are able to file annual returns and financial statements are encouraged to continue to submit documents.
