United Way Summer Success

Research has shown that 75% of students who struggle with reading in the third grade never catch up and are 4x more likely to drop out of high school. The United Way believes every young person should have access to the tools and resources they require in order to embark on their journey of school success, regardless of financial barriers.

While it may be tempting to believe that such challenges aren’t prevalent in Regina, the reality is that among the city’s 33,000 students, 45% enter Kindergarten without knowledge of letters or numbers, 26% struggle to read proficiently by grade 3, and 20% do not graduate high school on time.

The United Way envisions a city where every child experiences a strong foundation. Their Summer Success Program is a pivitol initiative towards this goal, offering a 30-hour summer camp aimed at cultivating foundational literacy skills in early readers facing challenges. Since 2014, the United Way has collaborated with Regina Catholic and Regina Public School Divisions to provide a meaningful solution, supporting children in Regina through summer literacy programming to enhance school readiness and enrich early literacy skills.

Virtus Group had a great time volunteering and packing summer success backpacks for the Regina Catholic School summer reading program! Loaded with essential school supplies, these backpacks play a vital role in supporting students during their camp activities and as they return to school in the fall!

Regina Food Bank

Food insecurity poses a significant health challenge in Canada, with more than one in ten households and 19 percent of children in Saskatchewan experiencing this issue, a number that continues to rise. The Regina Food Bank stands as the largest direct service provider in Regina, offering crucial support to those grappling with food insecurity.

The Regina Food Bank delivers transformative services through initiatives like their Food Hamper Program, designed to aid individuals facing food insecurity. Each food hamper supplied by the organization contains enough food to sustain a household for 7-10 days, and they make a concerted effort to align with the recommendations outlined in Canada’s Food Guide.

In addition to their food assistance programs, the Regina Food Bank provides valuable initiatives geared towards developing fundamental life skills. These include educational programs on nutritional cooking within a budget and personal financial management.

Virtus Group is proud to be a supporter of the Regina Food Bank. In the previous year, we were able to raise enough money to provide 4,290 meals and donate 195 pounds of food.

Salvation Army Christmas Toy Shop

Every year, nearly 2000 families in Regina turn to the Salvation Army for Christmas assistance. In 2021, the Salvation Army introduced the “Toy Shop” initiative, designed to offer support to families facing financial challenges. This program allows parents to personally choose donated gifts from the community for their children, all at no cost. Recognizing the diverse needs of each family, the Salvation Army empowers parents to select gifts that resonate with their children’s personalities. Additionally, each parent receives a gift card to a local grocery store, enabling them to choose a Christmas dinner tailored to their specific needs and cultural preferences.

Santa’s Helpers from Virtus Group were able to volunteer at the Salvation Army Toy Shop, and assist parents in finding the perfect gifts for their children. It was a great experience, contributing to the spread of Christmas cheer in the community.

Adopt A Family

In the spirit of the holiday season Virtus Group adopted two large families and provided them a little extra help to have a joyful Christmas. With the help of our generous staff donations, we were able to purchase each family groceries for Christmas dinner and a fulfilling breakfast, as well as some sweet treats. The donated funds also helped purchase gifts from each children’s wish list and a thoughtful gift to the parent(s). Virtus staff wrapped and labelled the presents and then delivered the food hampers and gifts to a distribution centre. Two local families were provided a Christmas thanks to our staff’s generosity. Thank you to those who donated and volunteered to bring it all together.

Christmas Donation

In the spirit of giving Virtus Group has made a generous donation on behalf of our clients, business associates, friends and staff to the Estevan Salvation Army Food Bank, Regina Food Bank and Saskatoon Food Bank.

Our local food banks serve the most vulnerable in our communities, ensuring all people have access to safe, affordable, and nutritious food. We are proud to be regular supporters and volunteers for our local food banks.

Movember Fundraiser

It is always an interesting time during the month of November in the Virtus Group office. We regularly run a Movember Campaign where participants compete against one another to see who can raise the most money for the cause.

In a combined effort both offices raised $14,000 to raise awareness of men’s health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. Thank you to the generosity of our clients, associates, family, and friends for supporting our Movember men in their campaign. The Regina office finished in the top 100 in Canada amongst team with 10 or less participants. Virtus Group has been raising money for Movember for 12 years and overall we have raised over $160,000 for the cause.

United Way Campaign Success

This summer, Virtus Group participated in a United Way workplace fundraising campaign. Between the two offices Virtus Group generated a combined total of over $37,000 for the United Way Programs in Regina and Saskatoon. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our campaign to make it a success!

We run a workplace United Way campaign annually as we see benefit in donating to programs that help people in our communities. Every dollar raised in Regina stays in Regina and every dollar raised in Saskatoon stays in Saskatoon. The money is distributed among different community programs that help make our communities a better place for everyone.

United Way’s areas of focus are From Poverty to Possibility; Healthy People, Strong Communities; and All That Kids Can Be.
